Hiking in Nagarjun also known as Jamacho hike

Hiking in Nagarjun is one of the shortest destinations for hiking in Kathmandu. It is a popular, less crowded hiking trail inside the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. There is a famous Buddhist stupa on Nagarjuna Hill which is about 7 km west of Kathmandu. A motorable road leads through Raniban (Queen Forest) to this stupa. It takes about 45 minutes to reach there in a private vehicle while the hike is about 5 km on foot and takes about 2-3 hours.

It is quite steep and one has to climb the stupa situated on the top of the Nagarjuna hill at 2,128 m altitude. Nagarjuna hill is also described in literature as Vindya mountain. The Jamacho hike is named after the Jamacho Monastery.

It offers a serene environment and stunning views of the Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding mountains. The most common starting point for the Nagarjun hike is at Balaju, which is around a 30-minute drive from central Kathmandu. The hike starts from Fulbari Gate near Balaju bypass, way to Osho Tapoban and Trishuli. The hike starts and ends in Kathmandu and takes around 6-7 hours to complete.

Nagarjun is a protected area, and it’s not uncommon to encounter various species of birds and wildlife during your hike. While the trail is well-marked, some visitors prefer hiring local guides to ensure they don’t get lost and to learn more about the area.

You’ll need to bring drinking water and lunch as there are no shops inside the jungle. During the hike, you won’t find any water resources so it will be a good idea to carry enough water.

When to go hiking in Nagarjun?

All the seasons are best except the rainy season but spring and autumn are the best. During these seasons views are beautiful. If you are hiking during the rainy season then it will be helpful if you carry some remedy for leech. It is advisable to start early in the day to avoid the heat during the summer season.
